Testing 123...4

As I mentioned in my Figuring Out Her Genes post, the next step in understanding Sienna's genetic makeup was to have Joe and I tested to see who carries which gene mutation.  This should confirm that her DF508 and Exon22Dup mutations are in trans, or in layman terms, on two different genes (one from Joe, one from me).

We were waiting to hear back from the testing center on whether or not our insurance company, Aetna, would cover our tests.  Each test cost roughly $1,500, so we were really hoping to not have to pay this out of pocket!

While we waited to hear back, I reached out to our clinic to see what other options we might have if Aetna didn't cover our tests.  Our clinic put me in touch with the CF Foundation since they offered some discounted testing - which would run us roughly $730 a test instead of $1,500.  I also reached out to our Aetna Case Manager to see if she could provide insight into whether the requested genotyping would be covered under my medical plan.  She thought it would be, but wasn't sure.

Luckily, we heard from the testing center on Friday and confirmed Aetna would be covering both of our tests at 100%!  I went ahead and set up appointments for both Joe and I to get blood drawn for Monday.

After lots of running around to find the right lab, we both had blood drawn on Monday and now just await the results (which may take several weeks).

One perk for getting blood drawn at a Children's testing lab - snoopy and planet band-aids (shown off below).

Who doesn't love a Snoopy band-aid?
